Winter in South Australia

South Australia is truly such an underrated part of Australia. It offers some of the best food and wine in the country, the people are incredibly friendly and hospitable, and there is so much to see and do that it can’t all be done in just one weekend. This was my third visit to South Australia and there’s still so much left for me to see! South Australia Tourism invited me to visit SA for a Winter getaway girls trip, and I had an absolute blast. During my previous visits, I’ve spent time in the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley, and Adelaide City. This visit I was able to explore a completely new region called Fleurieu, which is located about forty five minutes South of Adelaide City. During our trip, we wined and dined for three days straight and had some incredible experiences that are completely unique to the region. Peep below my list of what we got up to over three days in Fleurieu!

D’Arenberg Winery & D’Arry’s Restaurant

Located in the McLaren Vale region you’ll find the most bizarre cubic structure, which also happens to be D’Arenberg Winery! We took a wine making class here and also had lunch on property at D’Arry’s Restaurant. It was an amazing afternoon filled with laughs and stories over some truly amazing food!

Maxwell Winery & Cave

This was my favourite experience of the week, and I cannot recommend it enough. Never in my life did I expect that dining in a cave would become one of the most memorable experiences and meals I’ll ever have. We were treated to the most glorious seven course degustation at Maxwell Wines in McLaren Vale. The cave was originally made for mushroom growing, and was inherited by the current owner. At the back of the cave, due to the humidity, mushrooms can still be found growing here. But the space has also been utilised to create a unique dining experience for small groups. If there is one thing you MUST do on your trip to South Australia. It’s this. Oh and if you go, be sure to try the Honey Mead. It’s my personal favourite, and don’t forget to ask for the story behind it as well!

Down The Rabbit Hole Wines

After we landed in Adelaide we all headed to Down The Rabbit Hole Winery. Here, we spent our first night in South Australia meeting all the girls on the trip as Elise & Dom welcomed us into their soon to be opened winery. The love & work they have given to this place over the past few months has been absolutely incredible. To here their stories & love for Fleurieu made us so inspired and excited for the next few days we would spend exploring this region. We started with wine tasting on the bus, which they completely transformed. See the amazing transformation story here, it is completely unrecognisable from the before pics they showed us! We then had an amazing dinner in their main shed, which they’ve also completely transformed. So many amazing stories & memories will be made here, I’m sure of it. See here more information on their winery!

Port Willunga Caves

This beach offers an amazing sunset view. We came to this place on a whim, and were delighted to find such an amazing cliffside feature! The caves that stand today at Port Willunga Beach were carved out of the limestone by fisherman who used to store their boats inside.

Nido Restaurant

Owned by Max & Laura Cassai (of Masterchef fame) is the restaurant called Nido Bar. Nino Bar is located in Adelaide City, but Laura came out to our house one night and cooked us the most amazing home cooked Italian meal. My god, she really knows what she’s doing. She served up some of the most simple but delicious plates of food. I can’t wait to return to Adelaide so I can head straight to Nido myself.

See here for more on Nido Bar.

The Vineyard Retreat

During our first night, I slept in the most unique lodging called The Vineyard Retreat. Located on a vineyard, the property offers six distinctive houses and cadoles. I stayed in the Cadole Avalon which you can see below. It was amazing to wake up to a beautiful vineyard view! I would highly recommend staying here for such a cute and unique stay in Fleurieu.

You can find more information about this property here.

The Summer House

We spent our last few nights sharing a house with the girls in The Summer House. The Summer House is located in Port Elliot, which is about an hour’s drive South of Adelaide. This beautiful boutique home, although called The ‘Summer’ House, was the perfect place for us four girls to share in each other’s company for a few nights. The house offers three bedrooms and was so cosy to spend time here as we welcome Winter!
