A little known fact about me: I minored in social & cultural analysis at NYU. I only sometimes mention this when asked what I studied at NYU because saying the phrase “social & cultural analysis” made me feel pretentious and maybe even illegitimate because, though I was born in America, I never lived there until college. I had the privilege of living in and going to school in an environment of people that looked like me, where systemic racism that defines America rarely saw me. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ The first class I took in the SCA department was called Yellow Peril (S/O JACK TCHEN ♥️ and the incredible ppl I met in that class!!!) – it taught me about the system that has valorized Asian Americans in relation to black people to support white supremacy’s agenda. The idea that Asians are the good minority is an agenda built on the further suffering and oppression of black people, and further alienates them from society. Asian Americans benefit from anti-blackness and that is why racism is rampant in Asian communities. We are not the better minority. We don’t work harder. We don’t do things differently. We just have a different set of privilege. It is so important for us to be active allies for our black brothers and sisters who have paved the way for justice all across the board!!! NOW is the time for us to show up for the black community. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Thank you to everyone on here who has posted their anger, anguish and calls for action. I am so fucking grateful and relieved to be surrounded by likeminded people who want to do and be better. Seeing this momentum is empowering to witness. But if we want this to be the revolution we need it to be, it takes way more than just posting on social media. Go out there and manifest what you’re preaching. Call people out on their bullshit. Challenge family members. Support black businesses. Drop racist friends who weigh you down. Encourage conversation. Consume media and art on how to be actively anti-racist. “Not racist” doesn’t exist. Even years of my higher education only primed me for the kind of activism I want to be a part of. And it starts with using the only platform I have to do so. 🤍 #BLACKLIVESMATTER

I miss unexpectedly walking down the street and running into a friend, an old friend or even an acquaintance and feeling just a little bit more grounded. I miss the gross heat of summer in the city. I miss sitting in a coffee shop in the middle of a workday and wondering what the fuck everyone else in the coffee shop does for a living lol. I miss being downtown and purposely going out of my way to walk through Washington Square Park. I miss that 7th Avenue tunnel when transferring from the L train to the 123 and telling myself to suck it up because the slight incline is actually a butt workout! I miss walking out of my apartment on a hot summer night with a litty outfit on and knowing it’s gonna be a good night. I miss committing to plans and then backing out and not regretting my decision one bit. I miss crying on the subway and making eye contact with strangers who let you know that everything’s gonna be ok. I miss hating on Joe’s because there are better slices out there!! I miss wanting to scream GET ME THE FUCK OUT OF HERE knowing that I very well could but I never do because at the end of the day my home is within the chaos of the city and there is something so wildly special about the empathy of every other New Yorker that makes the living… nice. ⁣ ⁣ Thinking of New York lots today. Taken from my new apartment that I only got to live in for one week. My mom warned me not to move in before the world was going to go to shits and MOM WAS RIGHT, as always. Ugh. See you soonish, kinda, maybe 🍒🥺
