Strict lockdown regulations haven’t stopped local businesses and creatives from innovating through this difficult time.

Here, we pick out our top five favourite concepts for food, drink and hospitality that focus on local communities, purpose-led apps and farm-to-table concepts.

Five Key Brands to Watch: Cape Town Hospitality Concepts

Pineapple House Boutique

The Pineapple House Boutique Hotel is Rupert and Lesley Sykes’ passion project: a nine suite luxury boutique hotel in Sea Point. Each of their suite has its own bespoke identity – with a South African twist – that leverages the local and caters to design-driven and eco-conscious travellers.

Babylonstoren

This working farm has an on-site hotel, spa, farm-to-table restaurants, a winery and veg garden. Babylonstoren is located in the Cape Winelands outside the city. Its affordable Harvest Box has been a lockdown favourite, and is based on what’s in season, along with offcuts of spekboom (South African semi-arid miracle plant) to grow at home. It’s cold-press juices, freshly baked breads and Mourvèdre rosé are the current trending products sold in-store and online.

UCOOK

This meal kit and delivery service channels a community-driven ethos. It offers Cook Along with chefs across South Africa, Market Box Mondays and partnerships with local restaurants. It supports Cape Town’s farmers and upskilling projects. Its Food Fund raised R1m over a seven-week period, which has fed over one million people locally.

Abalobi App

This mobile app allows small-scale fishers to upload their daily catch on to a digital marketplace for local chefs as well as the general public. It seeks to empower small-scale fishing communities through the development of its technology. It will be opening its first official retail outlet space in food marketplace Makers Landing at the V&A Waterfront.

The Gin Bar at the Honest Chocolate Cafe

This gin bar is tucked away in the Honest Chocolate Cafe’s intimate courtyard. It serves local gins, cocktails and offers educational gin tastings. Honest Chocolate Cafe is also an unmissable place, known for its chocolate slabs made with local ingredients such as buchu, Kalahari salt and naartjie. It’s slabs are ethical from bean to bar, and the brand collaborates with local artists for packaging designs.
