Introducing the WGSN Future Makers: Tyra Raquel Galloway

We spoke with Tyra Raquel Galloway, a Fashion Merchandising student based in the US. Read on to find about her interest in digital and virtual fashion, along with some music recommendations.

So Tyra, what are you up to at the moment?

I am currently a Junior at Kent State University. I major in Fashion Merchandising and minor in Digital Science. Throughout this semester, I will be working on a fashion forecasting project focused on Nike Inc.’s women’s apparel.

Are you specifically interested in the digital side of fashion?

I am leaning more towards a position that specializes in technology and the digital world of fashion. That being said, I am still deciding what it is I want to do as a career.

Are there any designers who use digital technologies in their work that really inspire you?

I admire Congolese designer, Anifa Mvuemba, because she is a Black woman who completely changed the idea of innovative design. She is most commonly known for her virtual 3D fashion show to display her PInk Label Congo Collection. Not only was the show amazing, but the message behind it is beautiful. I love the way that Mvuemba uses her talents to open a discussion on the positive attributes Congo has to offer. As a Black woman, I understand what it’s like to constantly be seen in a negative light or to only hear and see negativity about where you come from. Anifa Mvuemba changes that narrative by using her designs to represent Congo, her home, in a positive and uplifting way.

What is it that drives you?

What drives me is my determination to be successful. I am a go-getter. Once I start a project or develop a new interest, I am always set to see it through. Another thing that drives me is wanting to make my parents proud. They have done so much to get me to where I am, so I want to show them that it was all worth it.

Finally, do you have any music recommendations that help you concentrate?

I like to listen to R&B music while I work. I like calming/slow music that relaxes the mind. Some of my favorite artists are Jhené Aiko, SZA, 6Lack, Giveon, Blxst, and Ambré.

Tyra is mentored by Joanne Thomas, who heads up content at WGSN’s sister brand, Coloro. Joanne is an expert in informing design with consumer behaviour, and the application of colour across the creative industry, especially within both fashion womenswear and activewear sectors.
