7 Need-to-Know Highlights from London Fashion Week
Key Trend – Subversive Sexy
Our Subversive Sexy story returns for another season, spotted at a host of designers in London. Layered sheers, ruched details, a splash of leather and experimental cut-outs that elegantly reveal the body are at the heart of this trend. We’re loving this darker twist on party dressing, that turns the understanding of sexy, feminine dressing on its head.
Key Colour: Butter
After reviewing London’s shows so far, it’s clear that there’s one standout colour emerging for S/S 21, butter. Molly Goddard applied this buttery neutral to her full-volume dresses, Victoria Beckham to slinky draped jersey dresses, and 16Arlington proved this shade has plenty of depth for occasionwear, too. Also called out in both New York and Copenhagen, this shade is a must-have for S/S 21.
Key Item: Romantic Dress
Pretty romantic dresses appear to be having a run both in New York and now in London. These silhouettes provide a canvas for creativity as designers look to inventive ways to manipulate textiles. Resourcefulness and imagination with leftover fabrics gives rise to diversified and unique shapes. Add delicate ruffles and highlight seams and edges with contrast lace edging for a dramatic visual appeal.
Key Print: Furnishing Florals
Inspired by the novel The Volcano Lover, the Erdem collection was loaded with romantic and historical references, but the signature embroideries and rich prints particularly captured our attention. As interior patterns continue to influence print and pattern, an increase of delicate florals are enriching dresses for pieces with transseasonal appeal.
Key Detail: Cutout
Cutouts crop up yet again, after also proving hugely popular across NYFW. Designers got creative with placement, breathing new life into minimalist styles such as basic jersey dresses. We’re backing this detail to be huge for S/S 21, so get cutting!
Footwear & Accessories: Statement Slide
Possibly the funkiest footwear to emerge across the S/S 21 catwalks, we can’t get enough of the hyper-texture statement sliders appearing in London. Pronounce opted for furry, dual colourways, while Molly Goddard teamed up with Ugg for her colourful curly creations. Although not for everyone, these slipper hybrids – ideal for two mile wear – certainly inject a bit of fun into the footwear category.
Denim: Florals
We called out florals as a key print trend for denim in NYC, and in London the trend emerges once again via the oversized botanicals at Molly Goddard. Give digital prints a lived-in look with faded finishes that evoke a more vintage ’80s style.
