Seven need-to-know highlights from New York fashion week

Key Trend – Pretty Feminine

There’s a fresh and positive springtime feel to the start of this season.  As the title suggests, this trend is full of ultra-feminine pieces that are as pretty as they are beautiful. From blouses edged with frills to dresses with deep layers and folds, these work just as well for after-five dressing as they will for satisfying the need for #abovethekeyboard dressing

Key Colour -Mango Sorbet

Zesty shades of mango sorbet proved to be a key direction in New York, with many designers opting to apply this shade to head-to-toe looks. As we predicted, this colour is becoming a mood-boosting, feel-good bright for womenswear

Key Item – Comfort Blazer

Practicality is key with items that not only are easy to wear but complement a #stayathomestyle outfit. This means it’s no surprise that the blazer, in several guises, makes a noticeable entrance. The silhouette is looser, accommodating the move toward comfort. This is the piece to dress up those relaxed trousers, a simple dress, skirt or short

Key Print – Watercolour

What’s next for tie-dye? “Well, expect watercolour to be the medium of choice for S/S 21 prints, as spotted in Jason Wu’s collection,” Says Senior Print & Graphics Editor, Hannah Watkins “From statement florals to animal skins, soften your perennial favourites with watercolour washes for commercial appeal, offering an easy update to popular printed dresses.”

Key Detail – Cut out

Cut-out details cropped up at New York Fashion Week, where designers such as Sandy Liang, C+plus Series and Kim Shui all exploring the use of negative space. An easy way to drive newness for basic tank shapes, simple cut-outs that draw attention to the waist seem to be the go-to detail. For a more commercial application, consider simple cold shoulders

Footwear & Accessories – Square Toe

The ubiquitous square toe returns as a key footwear detail at NYFW. From flat slides and padded sandals to statement mules, make sure this must-have feature is represented throughout S/S 21 collections

Denim – Joyful Expression

Collina Strada collaborated with artist Sean-Kierre Lyons for a series of hand-doodled flowers and other expressive illustrations, offering up some serious mood-boosting, but most importantly sustainable denim looks
