Hobbycraft’s 2019 craft trends track the rise of the creative consumer

UK craft retailer Hobbycraft has released its craft trends report for 2019, which spotlights the consumer making trends that are set to dominate sales and lifestyles. While last year’s report saw papercraft, journalling and weaving rise to the fore, 2019 will see a wave of interest in wabi-sabi mending and candle making.

Hobbycraft predicts that a key trend will be ‘dirty pouring’ – which it describes as “an art which involves mixing more than one paint colour in the same container before adding (or pouring) it to canvas or substrate”. Sales of dirty pouring products increased for the brand 14% in 2018 and it’ll be increasing its range for 2019.

Candle making is also on the up, seeing a 41% rise in sales in 2018 compared to 2017. Another trend to watch is pyrography – wood burning projects that enable personalisation of products and gifts. Sales of wood blanks, for such projects, are up 360% on 2017. Hobbycraft also predicts that calligraphy will continue as a key trend from 2018, with item sales up 40% this year.

The final trend that Hobbycraft spotlights is one that WGSN has tracked closely over the past few seasons, and forecast to be key for 2018-2019 in the macro trend HumaNature. Wabi-sabi is a Japanese philosophy that appreciates the beauty in transience and imperfection. For home products and for crafting, a key wabi-sabi technique is kintsugi, or filling in the cracks in an item in precious gold resin or glue, to re-add value.
